The Big “S” in FoundationS

Hebrews 11:8-10

By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

How important can an “S” be? One thing is clear as you enter Hebrews 11, the heroes of faith lived with heaven as their home and destination. Let’s consider the father of faith, Abraham. Although he was given the Promised Land, he chose to dwell in tents as a wanderer. Heb. 11:10 gives the reason for his rugged lifestyle, “for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.”

Did you notice the “s” on foundation? The city he longed for wouldn’t just have a foundation, but foundations—showing eternal security and stability. Does the “s” in foundations jive with the New Jerusalem? Rev. 21:14 gives a resounding yes, “Now the wall of the city had twelve T, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.”

May I encourage you to set your gaze upon the city with foundations, as did Abraham, Moses and Paul? I leave you with Phil. 3:20-21,

“For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body”
